Wetpixel/Under the Jungle Cenote Photography Workshop 2023

In May 2023 Wetpixel, in conjunction with Under the Jungle and Tom St. George, will be hosting another series of their highly successful and intensive photographic workshops focusing on capturing stunning imagery of the underground world. The workshop will be held in the epicenter of beautiful decorated caverns - Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. These caves offer amazing visibility, fantastic cave decorations (speleothems), beautiful and very photographic light, dreamy, ethereal landscapes along with relatively warm water and almost no current.

The open water ares of the cenotes are areas that allow access to the cavern systems and have gin-clear water, fantastic light, and (in some cases) photogenic plant life.

Diving and taking pictures in caves need to be undertaken carefully. The workshop will work to ensure that you capture amazing images within the limits of your training, experience, and qualification. Wetpixel is partnering with Under the Jungle, who has extensive knowledge of ensuring safe and productive photography in the cenotes. We are also running them all with a 1:1 participant to guide ratio. This maximizes flexibility and means each participant has a “built-in” model as and when required.

The team will ensure that the sites you are taken to are suitable for your experience and qualification level.

The participants will be mentored by Under the Jungle’s Natalie Gibb, award-winning cave and underwater photographer Tom St George and Wetpixel’s Adam Hanlon. Specific areas that we plan to cover include:

  1. Equipment and general photographic technique.
  2. Ambient Light photography
  3. Balanced Light Photography
  4. Off camera lighting
  5. Composition and modeling

We will hold image reviews each evening, to discuss what worked (and what didn’t!), to share ideas, and to inspire each other. Of course, all activities are voluntary!

Diving Skill Clinics for Photographers

Some of the participants on our 2022 workshops found that their open water diving skills were challenged by the cenote environment, so we are running two optional Advanced Diving Skills for Underwater Photography clinics.

These three-day programs will focus on precision buoyancy control, trim (including going out of trim in order to take photographs) and propulsion techniques, including reverse kicking.

2023 Dates

Dates for the workshop are 7 to 14 May 2023 and then 21 to 28 May 2023.

The Skills Clinics will be held from 2 to 5 May and then from 16 to 19 May.

Accommodation for all the workshops will be on a full board basis in luxury apartments near to Puerto Aventures.
