Review: IMAX DeepSea 3D

On Wednesday night, Feb. 21,  my wife Hiro and I were fortunate to be invited to the World Premiere of Howard and Michele Hall’s newest, latest, and greatest underwater film - the IMAX 3d film by the name of… DEEPSEA 3D. The Premiere was held at the California Science Center IMAX theatre in downtown Los Angeles. All I can say is that when this film opens in the IMAX theatre near you… make a beeline to see it ASAP.

For those of you who are fans of the Hall’s previous underwater films, I can assure you that you will be bowled over by this beautiful underwater film as, in my opinion, this is their crowning achievement.

Shooting in the field for well over a year and in at least 8 different worldwide locations, this 40 minute spectacular features critters behaving in the most unusual ways…

Wetpixel/DivePhotoGuide Contest Winners Announced Photo

Wetpixel/DivePhotoGuide Contest Winners Announced

Wetpixel.com and DivePhotoGuide.com have teamed up to celebrate the beauty and delicacy of the marine environment by developing the first instance of a new, annual, international underwater photography competition. For our inaugural event, only digital entries were accepted (images taken from digital cameras or scanned from film).  Photographers competed in six categories to win more than $25,000 in prizes, including premium dive travel, underwater photography equipment, and more, and 15% of entry proceeds will be donated to marine conservation efforts.

Winners were announced on stage at the 2006 Our World-Underwater festival in Chicago, Illinois last night - click through to read about the contest winners and prizes.  Congratulations to all who entered (Wetpixel members were well represented) and to the well-deserved winners and HMs.  Special thanks to the sponsors and to OWU, who made this contest possible.  A unique feature of this contest was the special Compact Camera category, where submissions had to be taken using small “point and shoot” type cameras (no DSLRs allowed).  The winners of this first Compact Camera category really put the pint-sized cameras to great use, as you’ll see by the fabulous winning results.

Review: IMAX Deep Sea 3D

Deep Sea 3D is an amazing 40 minute total immersion into the underwater world. With charismatic underwater creatures as stars and narration provided by Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, the film is first class family entertainment. This is a fantastic film that all underwater photographers must see, and more importantly they should take the whole family. There can’t be a better way to get to know the ocean without getting wet. Deep Sea 3D opens at IMAX cinemas in the USA, Canada and the UK from the 3rd March.

Canon 30D Announced

Canon announced their latest 30D DLSR today. The camera is a mild update of the popular 20D camera, with one of the most notable features being a new large 2.5” LCD screen. This large screen is likely to appeal to underwater shooters enabling them to make a better evaluation of their shots while diving. That said the button positions on the back are different from the 20D meaning it will not fit into existing housings. And with few other specification advances over the 20D, I would not expect many housing manufacturers to be building new housings for this camera, especially because the 5D is proving such a popular camera with its FF sensor.
