Canon has officially announced the much rumoured upgrade for the EOS 5D Mark IV which incorporates Canon Log. The upgrade will be performed by Canon Service Centers from July and will cost $100. Using the new upgrade when shooting video will produce a cinematic look that captures maximum dynamic range and responds well to post processing and color grading.
LaCie has announced the 2big 2-bay RAID storage solution. Connected by Thurderbolt 3, it is available in 12TB, 16TB or 20TB capacities and features an integrated dock that has Compact Flash and SD card readers and a USB 3.1 port.
Panasonic has announced the second lens in their Leica DG lens series. The LEICA DG VARIO-ELMARIT 8-18mm / F2.8-4.0 ASPH lens offers an equivalent field of view to that of the 16-36mm on 35 mm sensors. Minimum focus distance is 0.23 m (9.06”), so it may perform behind a dome port.
Prior to the 2017 NAB Show, Adobe has announced a series of updates to its CC video apps. Premiere Pro, Media Encoder, After Effects and Audition all benefit from workflow and feature enhancements. The updates are free to Creative Cloud subscribers via the CC update mechanism or from the CC website.
Sony has announced the α9 full frame mirrorless camera. It features a 24.2 MP 35mm full-frame stacked Exmor RS™ CMOS sensor with a BIONZ X processing engine giving a native ISO range of 100 – 51200. It has a hybrid AF system with a claimed 25% faster performance than that of the α7R II. Video is 4K, with the camera using full pixel readout without pixel binning to collect 6K of information, oversampling it to produce 4K footage.
The Florida manatee has been moved off the endangered species list. Late last month the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced that the status of the Florida manatee will be upgraded from endangered to “threatened”. WWF-Australia reports that Australian and US scientists working off the Antarctic Peninsula in the Gerlache Strait have managed to attach non-invasive camera tags with 3D motion sensors onto humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae). The devices were stuck on their backs for 24 to 48 hours and recorded feeding behavior, including the animals lunge-feeding into tight swarms of krill.
In late 2016, CineBags Underwater released a series of pouches specifically designed to protect lens ports and other underwater imaging equipment in transit. The range includes pouches for different sized dome and macro ports, housing carriers/portable rinse tanks and tool bags.
