Sony poised to revolutionise image sensors

It looks as if Sony is poised to revolutionise sensor technology. PetaPixel has posted an article about a new patent made by the company that appears to show a whole new technique of recording color information at pixel level. “Active-Pixel Color Sampling” (APACS) uses a pixel level moving electronic color filter to sense RGB information, rather than the conventional interpolation process.

Benefits of this could include have fewer, larger pixels with high resolution. This would reduce the ammount of processing power needed by the camera and, according to the article, “it’s poised to take frame-rates, dynamic range, and low-light capabilities to heights that could legitimately be called insane.”

The patent lists both 1” (25mm) and 1.5” (36mm). Resolution is only 4.81MP, but as each pixel is more effective, this is not an accurate reflection on the sensor’s resolution. (Image by Shutterstock).
