World’s deepest sinkhole discovered in South China Sea

After a year of exploration, researchers have concluded that the Sansha Yongle Blue Hole is the deepest in the world at 987 feet deep. The “Eye” of the South China Sea is a full 300 feet deeper than Dean’s Blue Hole in the Bahamas, the underwater sinkhole that was previously thought to be the deepest in the world.

The underwater sinkhole is located in the Paracel Islands, and local fishermen have referred to it as the “Dragon Hole” for years. Exploration of the sinkhole lasted from August of 2015 until the announcement was made last week.
