The Schmidt Ocean Institute’s Costa Rica Deep Sea Connections project is underway. It is currently the deep sea areas and sea mounts in the coastal margin of Costa Rica around the Cocos Islands. Specifically, they are sharing amazing footage captured by their ROV of the creatures that are endemic at depths of around 3,500 m (11,500 ft.) of depth.

During a recent deep sea expedition off the coast of Panama by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, chief scientist Jesus Pineda witnessed an incredible gathering of crabs. While exploring the Hannibal Bank Seamount the scientists came across thousands of red pelagic tuna crabs swarming across the seafloor.

Oceano Profundo expedition discovers two new deep sea creatures

During the third leg of the expedition Océano Profundo 2015: Exploring Puerto Rico’s Seamounts, Trenches, and Troughs, scientists explored the deep sea off Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands. What made this expedition unique was the high-definition video that was live streamed to land based scientists all around the world. This allowed real time input from top experts that were not able to join the expedition and lead to suggestions and guidance as if they were on board the ship.
