The Coastal Research Library has published a book detailing “The Rise of 3D in Maritime Archeology.” It documents the history and importance of the developing 3D technology in sonar, laser, optical and other sensor-based technologies as a study tool in marine archeology. This includes photogrammetry and the use of Global Information Systems and 3D modeling software.

Yasmeen Smalley presents an introduction to the uses and techniques of 3D photogrammetry as a scientific tool for measuring coral reefs and assessing environmental impacts on them. An non-profit organization, the Hydrous has used the technique to map coral reefs in Hawaii, the Solomon Islands, the Maldives, Guam and Palau.
