REEF FISHES of the EAST INDIES: Digital Application for iPad and Kindle Fire

Global environmental organization Conservation International and digital publisher 36 Views have announced the release of REEF FISHES OF THE EAST INDIES, a digital guide to every known reef fish species in the most biodiverse region on the planet. Many divers may already be familiar with the 3-volume book set by Gerald Allen and Mark Erdmann on which the app is based - which unfortunately weighs over 7kg and is not particularly convenient for travelling divers! Fortunately due to the wonders of digital technology, now this massive tome is reduced to weightless gigabytes on your Ipad or Kindle Fire.

From the majestic Manta Ray to the jewel-like Mandarinfish, the app covers the nearly 2700 species known from the East Indies, which includes the Coral Triangle (Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands) as well as the South China Sea (including Brunei Darussalam to Vietnam and Singapore), the Andaman Sea (including Thailand, Myanmar, and the Andaman Islands of India) and Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean. With over 3,000 Retina Display/High Definition photos, the sheer quantity of content is split between three volumes for iPad that link together seamlessly, so you can move instantly between one volume and another. Organized by Classification, Family, and Species, the app will be regularly updated to keep up with the scientists’ new discoveries.

Importantly, REEF FISHES OF THE EAST INDIES doesn’t “stream” content, so you can take it out to sea, no Internet connection required! This helps make it the perfect digital reference guide for divers and nature lovers. The app contains many useful and interactive features including search, note-taking and drawing features, detailed entries for each species, and photo-sharing by email and social media.
