Possible Failure of Cameras Using Certain Sony Sensors
Today, a number of camera companies have announced product “advisories” due to discovered defects in their cameras. If these defects posed safety hazards, they would be called “recalls” but since they are more of a nuisance, they are called “advisories” so that the companies do not assume liability. I make this point not because I’m annoyed at the companies (although I am) but to explain the difference between a “recall” and a “product advisory.”
In any case, apparently, a few batches of Sony manufactured sensors are exhibiting problems which result in a distorted image, or a black image.
Visions In Sea Conference 22nd Oct
The popular Visions In The Sea Conference is taking place in London (UK) on Saturday 22nd October. This is a conference that invites top underwater photographers and gets them to provide the Visions delgates with real world skills that they can apply immidiately to their own photography. Visions is not just about the speakers showing their best shots, instead they are encouraged to talk specifically on certain subjects and show both their images that worked and those that didn’t. The focus of the event is firmly on digital this year. This years speakers include Martin Edge, Charles Hood, Jason Isley, Peter Rowlands and Wetpixel Co-Admin Alex Mustard. Tickets for the whole day cost £69 and are available from Ocean Optics.

Magic Filter Review
When Alex Mustard first announced the Magic Filter I was pretty excited as I was in the market for a red filter for my newly purchased 10.5mm wide angle lens. I was interested in a red filter because I wanted to experiment with the manual White Balance option that a digital SLR offers. As a full time underwater image maker, a lot of my work involves video and in the realm of underwater video, the red filter is king. When shooting video without lights and manually white balancing off a slightly off white slate, rich saturated colour can be captured from further away than what can be obtained using strobes on a still camera.

Have you found items missing from your checked luggage after a US flight? Anyone who’s traveled with expensive equipment can relate to the problems, especially frequent travelers. With the arrest of TSA inspectors and officers for theft and the losses incurred by travelers, it is time for US travelers to take action against the disorganized and ineffective TSA. TSA funding is allocated by federal lawmakers , i.e . congressional and senate control. If US citizens make it known of their displeasure and the inefficiencies of TSA, perhaps we will garner the change necessary to make our airport and airline security safer yet more traveler friendly.
