RED announces Scarlet and Epic

RED Digital Cinema finally announced the Scarlet and Epic, which are hybrid SLR / video cameras that shoot successive RAW files. Smaller and more modular than the RED ONE, the two new camera lines have options for 3K, 5K, 6K, 9K, and 28K (!) sensors (4.9 - 261 megapixels) and take RED, PL, Canon, Nikon, medium-format, Mamiya, Lunhof, and Alpa mount lenses. The various combinations will shoot variable speeds up to 120 FPS.
There are a multitude of options including lenses, handles, viewfinders, I/O modules, batteries, remotes, recording modules, and 6 different physical sensor sizes (including a super-wide sensor called the “Mysterium Monstro"). There’s even a way to build a 3D RED. The least expensive “Brain” is currently listed at $2,500, and entry-level model that supports Canon and Nikon lenses starts at $7,000. Check out the website for preliminary details! We’ll see how long it takes for someone to rig up an underwater housing.
Pretty cool concept; looks like something you’d get at the Lego store. It will be interesting to see where this all goes and which of the major manufacturers pick up on this, or maybe buy them.
Posted by loftus on 11/13 at 12:41 PMThe geek in me appreciates the new perspective, but I can only imagine that it’s a very narrow market segment that RED is really selling to. A 5D II is currently $2700 and will only drop - that’s for an impressive FF body w/ very good low-light quality.
You need to buy the $12,000 “brain” to get a FF Canon mount - not to mention how many thousands more to build out the rest of the camera.
If this comes to market successfully and without too many v1.0 headaches, it’s a huge step forward - but I don’t think it will affect the vast, vast number of amateur and enthusiast photographers out there for quite some time.
There’s a real risk that this will end up being little more than a boutique item for wealthy pros and smaller production companies that need the versatility that a setup like this brings.
