Sydney Underworld

The photo-art of Richard Vevers and Jayne Jenkins

Sydney has arguably the most amazing marine life of any major city in the world – an incredible array of bizarre creatures that are mostly unique to Australia. Yet most Sydney residents are completely unaware of the secret world on their doorstep… this is about to change.

Richard Vevers and Jayne Jenkins – two of Australia’s leading underwater photographers, will be holding a unique exhibition of Underwater Photo-Art, titled ‘Sydney Underworld’ that celebrates this amazing marine life.

The exhibition is a collection of approximately 22 portraits (including award-winning shots) of the unseen underwater characters that live in this great city – from the Weedy Seadragons of Bondi to the Morrays of Mosman. Each of the images will be appropriately presented – encased in resin as if still underwater.

The exhibition will be opened by the ‘Australian Legends’ Ron and Valerie Taylor and is proudly sponsored by Olympus.

The exhibition coincides with the imminent launch of the Bondi Marine Discovery Experience – a new world-class visitor attraction also designed by Richard Vevers. Located in the landmark Bondi Pavilion, the Experience takes visitors on a ’30 minute ‘virtual dive’ around the famous Bondi Bay to meet the characters that live there and features the world’s first walk-in underwater divesite simulation. The exhibition is also timed to coincide with the Ocean Care Day Festival on the 25 November.

Underwater Australia is the only gallery dedicated to promoting contemporary underwater art, and has built up a reputation for producing exhibitions that challenge people’s perceptions of underwater art.

The free exhibition will run from 19 November to 2 December 2007 at the Bondi Pavilion Gallery and will relocate to the Beach itself on Ocean Care Day. See an exhibition preview at http://www.underwateraustralia.com.au.
