Nikon has announced the D90 digital SLR, a 12-megapixel camera capable of shooting at 4.5 fps. The new D90 emphasizes Live View mode, and is the first SLR capable of shooting video. Video is 720p high definition, and the camera can shoot for 5 minutes at a time. The D90 also feature face-recognition and support for the new GPS Unit GP-1, an unobtrusive hotshoe attachment that allows the camera to store GPS information in each image’s metadata.

It is still unclear whether the D90 will fit into any existing underwater housings, but Wetpixel members are already discussing the possibility in the forum.

  1. 5.2 x 4.1 x 3.0” (132 x 103 x 77mm) body only for the D90

    and

    4.5” x 5.8” x 2.9” (113 x 147 x 74mm) without lens for the D200

    and

    4.5 x 5.8 x 2.9” (114 x 147 x 74mm) body only for the D300

    and

    4.1 x 5.2 x 3.0” (103 x 132 x 77mm) body only for the D80

This is what B&H;had for the camera specs. I am guessing the D80 and D90 body are the same even though the numbers are switched.

So a D80 housing could be working with this cam.

    Best,

  2. It indeed seems that all important control functions of the Ikelite D80 housing work for the D90. Except the (less essential?) four push buttons at the right side of the housing with the OK button in the middle.  Also, the Live view (video) and the Info control buttons at the right side cannot be controlled properly in the D80 housing.
So in my tentative opinion, the D90 can be used as a suitable but not ideal backup camera for people using the D80 with the standard Ikelite housing.
