The Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF) is an active ocean conservation group that has become well-known for its Volunteer Survey Project for diver education and the identification and tracking of fish life on an underwater ecosystem.

REEF recently introduced a beginner’s course for Florida, Caribbean, and Bahamas reef fish identification, complete with DVD video, survey slate, waterproof fish ID booklet, and surveying paper. Volunteer Park Chapman told me the real necessity is generating interest in fish counting at the local dive shops to create an awareness of the environment in the casual diver.
A seminar was held by the organization to discuss the alarming issue in the United States Atlantic coast of the influx and population growth of invasive Pacific lionfish - even going so far as to suggest opening a small fishery with the support of the Bahamian government.
