The winning images of the 2009 Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year award have been announced and are online at the British Natural History Museum’s website. This year’s winner in The Underwater World is Michel Loup, who photographed a pike reflected in the glassy underside of a Jura Mountains lake. Other underwater winners this year include Paul Nicklen, Doug Perrine, Nano Cordovilla, Kevin Schafer, Christopher Guglielmo, and Daniel Selmeczi. Congratulations!

Posted by DeanB on 10/22 at 01:59 PMThe winner? I didn’t get it. In terms of its portraiture, use of light, composition or looking at the tableau as a whole, I find it unexceptional.

BTW its in French so navigation through the site might be hit and miss :-)
Posted by Viz'art on 10/26 at 10:52 AMI have to admit to surprise as, whilst its a good pike, I’ve seen some images that are technically as good and compositionally better. I wonder if it’s the vegetation creating the impression of a Japanese painting that swings it?
I do like the judges decision not to fixate on a rare and inaccessible species.
