I plan on picking up a new digital slr within the next month or so. I had been looking at the D70s but prices for the D100 are good. Is there anything about the one over the other that makes a real difference? Side by side specs off NikonUsa seem close.

I'd like to here from people who have used both.

I have several Nikon lenses so I dont think I'll be switching brands, besides I hear Canon stinks.

D70 is my answer.

D100 may be a great altenativ if you find it together with a housing.
There are many that go with new models so to find a D100 Housing & camera in atractive price will be not so hard.

Is this you first underwter camera. Do you have housing & ports??

I have shot both the D100 and D70 underwater and have published images and won competitions with both.

The D100 has a better viewfinder. While the D70 has a faster flash synch, which can be helpful. The differences aren't big though and both take excellent pictures.

I think some of the D70 housings are better than the D100 housings as they are more compact.

I would look at what deals you can find out there. A second hand D100 with housing might be the best deal?

One big difference between the old D100 & the new D70 may is the autofocus system. I am not sure , Becauce I have never use a D100, but I think that the AF system of the D100 is more advanced.. True?

I have an ikelite housing with 3 ports, I really like the housing so I plan on sticking with it. Not to belittle any other manufacturer, but I have not seen any real reason for me to switch, at my level, and being able to see inside the housing is really nice.

I think right now i'm looking at $2500 for an Ikelite housing, camera body, and an Inon flash. (I may buy the Ike 8'' dome and a second Inon flash.)

As long as the viewfinder has a focus screen (d70 does) I think I will be happy there.

A faster sync speed does sound really nice.

I plan on shooting manual focus, I may change my mind but with some of my wide angle shooting, it just seems a better option. (My camera is currently a Nikon POS so the auto focus system may not be the best )

Thinking about it, the autofucus feature maybe one of the most important aspects for me right now. Blue water shots take forever to get locked in and forget about night shots of open water sharks. If one of the 2 cameras really stand out in this area it would be imporant.

I would love a the D2X but I cant justify the cost right now. If I get better and win a contest or have a photo published then I'll shell out some more money.

Welcome to my nightmare. having recently bought a D70 I was so impressed with it as a topside camera I have decided to get back into underwater photography, having given up on film (Niv III) some years ago. Finding a cost effective housing proved a challenge. If $$$ are an issue this presents some problems.

However I have recently concluded a deal to buy a used Subal with dome and D100 body.

Now I will have the best of both worlds, a backup topside camera, D70 and D100 and a housed D100. If only the D70 would fit the D100 housing.

Anyway by the time either the D2x drops in price or the D200 ships, maybe my skills will have developed sufficiently, based on Nikon history I will have plenty of time, and the quality of the work of other contributors provide much inspiration and insight.

I agree with the other comments, either will do the job at hand and for the price of a new D70 housing I get a Subal housing, dome, and D100 body. I have nothing to complain about and all is right with the world. Now if some can tell me where I left my O2 analyser I can fill some tanks and get wet.

I am currently using a D100 in a modified Subal Procase 4 housing. The results are perfect. It took me one week to to de modification. I don't see why a d100 should be better than a d70. Both are fine camera's. I would look for the cheapest housing for both models.

You might consider the d100 in Ike housing since the d200 might be similiar enough to fit in d100 case with little modification... You would then have backup d100 for topside or whatever and brand new d200...which sounds pretty good on the rumour boards...

With due deference to Starbuck, if the D200 (when it finally appears) fits in a housing designed for a D100, I will happily butter and eat my ex-Afghan Wars pith helmet - and photo the experience for Wetpixel readers.
