Hi Everyone. This is my first post here, so I must apologise for being a bit long winded. OK, here goes.....
I currently have a Nikon F90x in a Subal housing. I only use one flash, which is a housed Nikon SB80DX, also in a Subal housing. This setup works great, with TTL etc.I have just bought a D70, and want to sell my F90 housing, and get one for my D70. I am thinking of either the Subal, or maybe the Nexus, but am open to advice !!
The second part of the question is the inevitable lighting question! Can I still use my Sb80dx land flash in my housing with the housed D70 ?( I know this won't give me TTL though) I have ordered a Sb800, but need to know if that would work in my current housing. Or is it a case of selling that also, and buying new strobes? (I am thinking of getting 2 strobes this time round) If so, are there any which support iTTL on the D70? I have looked on the forums, but I think I am just confusing myself!!
I have mostly been shooting macro, which I love to do, but will be looking at going wide with the D70.
Again, sorry to be so long winded. Hope you guys can help,as I am getting more confused daily !! huh.gif

Dear Crazy,

Most of what you already own can be carried across. I would plan to sell just the housing and camera. If you stay with Subal you can continue to use your ports.

The SB80DX will work with the D70. It works in DTTL rather than the newer ITTL mode. But it will work fine. I don't see a big need to up grade to the SB800. I use an SB80DX on land with my D2x and it is great.

I suggest getting going with that setup and only then start thinking of investing is a pair of strobes etc.

Thanks for that, Alex. I think I will go with the Subal, as I have just spoken with Ocean Optics. (They are so helpfull) On the flash subject, do you know if the subal housing with my Sb80dx just works "as is", or does it need a different cable? Do you then shoot with the camera on manual? If so, how should the flash be set?I can only use the flash on manual with the d70 topside. Any other setting, and the flash just locks up.

Hi,

I don't own a D70, but I thought it supported dTTL too (have you checked the section of flash compatibility on the manual?), let's wait for an answer from a D70 owner. In any case, if you need to upgrade to the SB800, I think you can still use the same housing. You will loose a few controls, but you don't need many when shooting in TTL!

The D70 only supports iTTL. I guess this is why the flash locks up on anything but manual. I'm using my D70 with a manual flash underwater and I'm not missing TTL. The ability to instantly review the shot you've just taken means you can get the exposure by trial and error. I've been pleasantly surprised at how easy this has been and how little the aperture needs changing. With macro in particular I guess I'm taking most of my shots from around the same distance. Another big plus is shooting RAW I can make minor adjustments in post processing if the exposure isn't quite what I want.

Check the classifieds section if you're looking for a D70 Nexus setup - I think DBH has one for sale.

Otherwise, I'm sure you will be happy with Subal.

Welcome to wetpixel! You're going to love "going digital."

Cheers
