Hi Folks,

I've postes my quantitative reivew of the Ikelite eTTL2 conversion circuitry here at wetpixel. Click here to check it out:

Conclusion: It works!

Its clear that it works. Which is the most important thing.

I would prefer to see a test where the strobe is the only (significant) light source. Either by using a faster shutter speed throughout - (assuming that the synch speed of your camera is suitable) or doing the test when it is close to sunset. I think it is much easier to evaluate the consistency of TTL strobe control in strobe only lit images.

But I wouldn't get wet again - as it is quite clear that the camera can successfully quench the strobe at a variety of apertures from your tests.

I don't know much about Canon flashes - but I remember that Doug Perrine's winning Wildlife shot was taken using very fast flash synch. Only capable with Canon eTTL guns. Does the Ikelite module allow a similar feature with Ikelite guns?
Alex

Right, I have just been on the Competition website and here are the shooting data:
Canon EOS D60 with Sigma 14mm f2.8 lens; 1/800 sec at f5.6; digital ISO 200; Canon 550EX strobe; UK-Germany underwater housing.

Does this module also allow features like this? Or does it concentrate on the metering side of eTTL only?
Jolly
This nice feature (high speed strobe sync up to 1/4000s with D60, 10D, ....) works only with Canon guns. The curtain never uncovers the whole sensor. So the strobe fires several times to lighten the whole sensor area. I think this requires the camera E-TTL system to precisely control the strobe timing.
2nd curtain sync, hyigh speed sync - somehow it's still worth striving for an real E-TTL strobe :-)

So this is the same methodology as FP sync with the high end Nikon flashguns. This reduces the GN of the strobe by a large amount. I think that this is unlikely to be workable with the large flash tubes in the DS125/SS200 Ike strobes, that take a while to ignite.

Maybe it could work with the DS50.

James, are you able to test this rig with strobes other than Ike's? Does Ike make a cable capable of that?
ikelite
Other strobes can be connected if we offer such a sync cord, but only the Ikelite DS50 and DS125 SubStrobes will operate TTL.............
james
Like Ike said - TTL is only possible with the Ike strobes, because the TTL converter takes its power from the strobe.

As long as the "fire" signal is passed through the cord, I think any strobe can be used the "old fashioned" way as a manual strobe. I hooked up my Inon's to the housing, and I can get them to fire in manual power modes.
