I’ve got my order in for the new Canon 1D MK ll, looks like it will be some time in April before they actually start shipping.
I’m looking to get a jump start on making my own housing and I’m looking for someone that has a 1D. Looks like their going to be the same dimensions so I could plan on building my housing around the1D.
I have two options for my housing. I could try fitting it to a PVC pipe like I presently use with my Fuji S2 Pro, or I could make a mold and pour a suitable inclosure. I’d rather go the PVC route if possible but only if it will fit in a 8" tube. It will be much faster to build and I don’t mind putting up with the extra bulk.
What I need is a accurate silhouette of a 1D. This would help me determine if I could fit it into a PVC pipe. If their is someone willing to draw a silhouette of their camera? I would appreciate if they could lay it flat on a piece of paper with out the lens attached and trace the dimensions. Pay particular attention to anything that sticks out further than the body like the lug straps for the neck strap or anything else that protrudes. If you could e-mail the picture to me I could get started with the fabrication.
Thanks for the help,
Marc

Marc - Can you not walk into a local store and check out a 1Ds?

Hi Eric,
I’ve tried tracking down a local Fort Lauderdale dealers of Canon cameras but have not found a 1D. Most if not all the local dealers deal mostly with consumer cameras. My local Ritz Camera store has it as a catalog item only. I have not tried the Miami area, I’ll be calling around tomorrow.
When I bought my Fuji S2 Pro in Hollywood Fla, the store wouldn’t even open the box before I bought the camera. That’s when the camera first came out and the dealer had one for sale, and I paid $ 2,500. for it.
Thanks for the reply,
Marc

I'd like to see a pic of your S2 housing. Can you post one? I'd love to see one of your "make your own" housings. What do you use for the port?

This is the housing I made for my Fuji S2. I made it using 8" PVC pipe and It uses Ikelite dome ports. It’s much bigger than the compact housing most manufactures make but it’s cheaper and faster to build. I have a lot of experience making housings and enjoy making my own.
This is not exactly a do it your self project unless you have the proper tools and resources for the necessary parts.
