For folks who are wondering how these two flash metering systems work, check out this post by Thom Hogan:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp...message=7496277

d-TTL uses the 5 flash meters to read preflash reflection off of the SHUTTER CURTAIN. d-TTL only works with one flash.

i-TTL uses the 1005 segment meter in the viewfinder to read the preflashes. In addition i-TTL is designed to work with multiple flashes.
Additionally, I think some of the i-TTL metering is doing during the actual exposure.

Thanks for that link James!

iTTL looks like a definate improvement from everything that I have read.

Of course, Nikon didn't have to do too much to improve dTTL smile.gif

So...should I sell my SB80DX and buy an SB800 to use with my D100?

The SB800 will fit into the Subal flash housing I have.

dTTL, iTTL.... my brain hurts.

Just my question!
will the SB-800 fit into the SB-80DX housing?

I'm for this brain pain a bit of Nitrogen pressure helps laugh.gif

No, because the D100 doesn't do iTTL.

Those who buy a D70 will want to buy the SB800.

Question. I have 2 YS-90 strobes. I think they will not do "pre flash". Will the i-TTL metering work as good as the TTL I have on my film Nikon F80. If so, I recon I will be going digital real soon. If I gottta dump my strobes..... I recon I will hold onto film for some time to come.
james
The SB800 (and 600) will default to D-TTL when put on a D-TTL body like the D1x or D100

No, it will not work at all... AFAIK the only i-TTL strobes at the moment are the new ones (SB-800 and SB-600 or something :?: ) that Nikon just announced. Even the SB80 DX will not work in iTTL.

thanks sad.gif dont want to dump my strobes......... big investment.
james
It doesn't mean you can't use your strobes - just that you have to use them in manual mode.

The only digital SLR camera available today that does TTL with underwater strobes is the S2pro.

I see that the S2 pro is the only TTL camera but what kind of TTL has, DTTL or ITTL?

Thanks from Spain.

Escalar.
james
It has "regular" TTL like what the Nikonos, N90, etc use. This does not use a preflash.

D-TTL and i-TTL are "preflash" systems

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if the YS90-DX has a "TTL" mode compatible with the S2 Pro? I've currently got a few YS90DX's, and would just as soon keep them, but am considering moving to the S2 Pro from my E20n.

Ok, and for instance the coolpix 5000 is the flash a regular flash? I know that the people is firing this camera in TTL mode, but as far as i know it has a preflash.
Am i wrong?

Thanks from Spain.

Hi David:

Your YS90DX flashes will work just fine in TTL mode with your S2pro, so you can hang on to them.

Escalar: The Coolpix 5000 will TTL with any nikon compatible underwater flash (just about all of them). The preflash on that camera does nothing. I think there is a firmware upgrade available which will allow you to turn the preflash off as it does nothing for the exposure except waste batteries.

Quick question. Are we being up sold on this ?. I mean, if you create a new "TTL" which works great on digital, then, well people gotta dump their old gear and buy new stuff. How about the DX lenses. I mean, i wonder how much the 1.3x factor isreally an engineering / design issue and how much is it encouraging people to dump stuff and re-buy every thing.

Comon, they could send rockets to the moon 30 years ago, how difficult is this ??
