Trawling the bottoms of the deep seas is enormously damaging to the ecosystem and in 2006 the UN adopted a resolution to address this by 2008. However, many countries have failed to act. September 15-16 the UN general assembly will hold a open workshop to review the actions taken by States to protect deep-sea ecosystems and sustainably manage deep-sea fisheries.

Avaaz is aiming to collect half a million signatures on a petition to spur greater action to protect the deep seas. They have just passed the 300,000 mark with 36 hours to go. If you care about this issue please follow the link below.
