I would highly suggest the Sea & Sea RDX-D60 housing which accommodates the D40, D40x and D60. Its base price is $1399 USD without port. What lens or lenses would you like to use?

yea i was having a look at them but that price it quite a bit over what i was looking for, but ive only just got intrested in underwater photography and my nikon d40 might be a bit too complex to use underwater, so was thinking about getting a cheap set up to start with.

What would you suggest for a point & shoot set up?

The Ikelite is just about the cheapest for the D40, at $1200. Add in a strobe and port, and you're just over $2k plus your camera and lens. That's about as cheap as you can get into DSLR photography....
