I just returned from 12 days in Little Cayman. We flew SFO to Miami on AA, then transferred to Cayman Air. Unfortunately when we got to Grand, none of our 3 checked bags were there. A day later one showed up, but the other two never did. Fortunately the main photo gear was in our carry on, but the arms,cords,chargers,batteries,ex- port seem to be gone for good, as well as one+ set of dive gear, and our combined clothes bag. AA says they don't have them, and Cayman Air says the same thing.
The people at LCBR were great, giving us gear to use, and getting our laundry done while we were out diving. Other guests also helped out with toiletries, batteries, and offers of clothes.

My question is this. Does anyone know what criteria is used to determine weather the Montreal Convention, or Warsaw Convention reimbursement rates are applied to lost baggage?? I've done a little looking, but can't seem to figure it out. Unfortunately we didn't have trip insurance.

Something to consider for future trips. Always check your bags with the international carrier. That way you know who has them. Maybe less important on the way home than going. Hope you are reimbursed by someone.

Not sure if this is too late and relevant. My luggage arrived the last day of my recent trip to Roatan. I flew Delta and here is the info: Delta will re-imburse you $25 each day your luggage is 'lost' after the first 3 days of vacation. This is limited to a maximum of $150. I got receipts for my purchases for a pair of shorts and dive equipment rentals (all my dive gears did not arrive except for my hand carried regulator). Long and short of this - I called and wrote a letter to Delta explaining the circumstances, our attempts to track and recover the luggage (aided by my husband in the US, who did not go on this trip) and I sent whatever receipts I saved. The total cost was $250. Delta did re-imburse the entire amout after 8 weeks.

I believe, in the airline agreement, they will re-imburse up to a certain amount limit ($1000?) for lost luggage? Hope this is helpful. Sorry about your lost luggage. I know it is a bummer from personal experience

If you can't collect from the airline, you can file against your homeowners policy. I actually asked my Allstate Agent about this and he said that you could and it wouldn't void my policy. My specific question to him last year was if I had lost baggage while in the Philippines, or equipment stolen from the room etc. So at worst, you'd be out your deductable.



I didn't know you could do this. So if you're travelling and have a connecting international carrier, you can check the bags at your local airport with the international carrier even though you're not getting on their planes until you reach another city? Sounds kind of odd...can you elaborate?
