Just purchased the new Canon XTi with the stock 18-55 mm lens. I plan to make this my underwater camera and wondered if any one is using it. The Ikelite housing just came out, and there will be a Sea & Sea housing out in Jan or Feb. Does anyone have a preference. Can I use it without a flash, and if I need one, what flash should I obtain.

I'm used to shooting with a Sony Cybershot, and the delay in shutter was very frustrating. I should not have this problem with the Canon.
Thanks

Congrats on your new purchase. Yes, you will need a strobe, but it depends on what housing you will get. If you get the Ikelite, strobes of the same brand will work on TTL with your camera. If you get the Sea&Sea housing, S&S or Inon strobes are good options...

I have the 350D with the DX350 housing from Sea and Sea. 8" dome port with focus gear and 10-22mm canon W/A. Also 60mm macro, with macro port and gear. I only have 1 S&S YS90 strobe and also magic filter for the W/A.

I havent used it underwater yet but am off to the Maldives in a week for 14 days of diving so I will do a trip report and rig report when I return to the Uk. The feel of the housing out of water is very good, with easy access to all the buttons.

cneidietz,

The Ikelite housing when used with an Ikelite DS125 or DS51 strobe(s) will give you eTTL2 like using a Canon dedicated flash on land. Plus the ability to dial in EV flash output, or even switching to manual underwater right from the housing back.

The Rebel XTi is a fantastic choice at a budget price. I used two Rebel XT units for a year shooting 10K + clicks on each. Will be likely shooting a Rebel XTi with the improvements soon.....
