Hello everyone !
I had seen a few people talking about the woody's diopters and I was wondering where do can get them and what magnification rate you get with the Nikon 60mm and 105 ? Can you use them with the Subal flat port ?
Thanks

Hey David,
I purchased mine from Ryan at Underwater Camera Pros. It's a great piece of kit. At least you've some flexibilty with macro focus distances.
Not sure what the reproduction ratio is, I think of it really as a way to reduce the minimum focus distance which results in the critter being larger in the frame. My inclination is to say it goes from 1-1 to 1.7-1 or something just short of 2-1.
And yes, it fits the Subal flat port.

Hi David,
Magnification is 1.2x more than what the lens give you (meaning you can get closer to the subjects, so I don't know if it is good on the 60). It does fit the Subal flat port. You can contact any of our shop sponsors on the right and they will have more information about it.

Ack, Luiz is typing at the same time I am...
Luiz, if the Woody's is 1.2-1, would that mean using it with the 2xtc push it to somewhere around 4-1?

Hi Rand, are we talking about the same diopter? The one listed here:
http://www.nexusamerica.com/Misc/Misc.htmlHas a magnification of 20%, which means 1.2-1. I haven't bought it yet because I thought it was too weak, is there a more powerful version?

Yes Rand, typing at the same time!

I think that with the TC it would give you 2.4-1 (instead of 2-1 with the converter only), but I may be wrong! Don't take my word for it, let's wait and hear what others have to say.

Luiz,
Yes, that's it. Never dive without it.
I really have to question the 20% though. It really seems more than that. Definitly have to do a test with and without the diopter now.

Magnification is a sloppy way of stating how beneficial these can be, but I don't have a better way, so who am I to talk...
The Nexus Wet Lens (also marketed by someone more creative than me as a Woody's Diopter) is an excellent macro too underwater. Once you've tried one, you won't dive without it again!
It is a diopter, but I'm not sure of the exact strength (it isn't incredibly strong). It doesn't noticeably degrade image quality when working at the lens' 1:1 position.
Since this adds another water/glass/air boundry, refractive magnification also comes into play, further lengthening the reach of whatever lens you are using. The sum of many parts is what makes this go. Your macro lens is 4/3 stronger underwater behind a flat port than it is in air because of this, then the diopter effect improves this magnification further, and the wetmate lens adds another 4/3 magnification.
My calculator says this combination should shoot 1.7:1 at the lens' minimum focus distance, and the diopter will allow you to get even closer.

This is the size you need for a subal flat port-

And, for those with an Aquatica port they have manufactured a ring to hold the Diopter and attach it to their Macro port. (Same Woody's diopter just adapted to the Aquatica port) Beautiful little piece. I will give it a run in a few days. It attaches to the port with set screws.
Cheers

That is great news! Is this a stock item, or a one off for you?

I have to chip in with this: Woody (at Nexus USA) is one of the nicest people to do business with that I have ever had the pleasure.
I ordered a URPro filter from him some years ago. I can't remember the exact reason now, but I wasn't able to pay with my credit card. Woody said not to worry, that he would send the goods and when I could work out how to pay him, to send the money over...... the goods arrived a few days later; and I got a money order to him.
If you are reading this Woody, thanks. You are a star. (And I especially appreciated the Stay Safe messages you sent me when I was living in Afghanistan)
Shop with Woody, guys. His customer service is amazing.

I have all three sizes in stock currently, 90mm, 100mm, and 110mm (110mm size fits Subal flat ports). The diopter is like reading glasses for the lens. Adds 20% magnification and also reduces working distance some. No light loss is experienced with a diopter so no exposure compensation is necessary. The lens and lens ring on these diopters are all identical, only the outer cap portion is different. The diopter adds 20% additional magnification and, of course, is removeable under water, unlike a screw-on filter on the lens itself. Email me privately for more information. Thanks for the kind words, as well. Happy New Year to everyone!
