Dang, Nikon hit it right on the head and my Nikon D200 arrived at my local camera store this afternoon. It is a sweet looking solid feeling camera, but, unfortunately due to the funeral of my mother in law, I haven't been able to play with it much yet! Good thing the weekend is coming up.

Now I need a D200 Ike housing.

Sweet! Looking forward to hearing more about it once you get a chance to play around

Just wondering if any one has had a D100 & a D200 side by side, or if they have done the obvious and tried to put a d200 in a d100 housing ?

I am happy to give it a try but D200 is not scheduled for delivery Down Under until mid January
Cheers

Click to view attachmentI did, the D200 is more akin to a D2 serie camera, it's chunkier and for those manufacturers who don't use a generic shell for housing, it will mean a new housing design, usually not as fast a turnover dry.gif but a more tailored fit to the camera's controls and functions smile.gif .

See the attached shot for a '' on the table'' side by side sizing
sdingeldein
The D200 IS chunkier than the D70 or D100.

My first impression:

I generally test a camera out on my cat: willing subject who doesn't mind a camera stuck in her face. But most importantly she is jet black with white paws and a white belly and she sleeps on a white towel.

Wow! The D200 handles the white and black areas better than any camera I've had. I can see more detail in her paws and her black coat than I have seen in a digital camera. On top of that, some of the pink in her skin shows through the fur on her paws. And this with just the pop up flash. I'll try the SB800 later.

Ike, get crackin' on that housing, LOL!

Here is a picture of my cat. It is a tad bit out of focus but I can tell you that she is a hard critter to photograph without losing detail in the black or blowing out the white. I am impressed that this camera gets the white fur well, including some pink that shows through from her skin and the light dirt that darkens some of her fur.

Can't wait. I think I was 4 or 5th on the list with Underwater Photo-Tech. Hopefully they'll be shipping soon.

Great cat. That is one of the universal cat positions. I'll bet he (she) is also tough to photograph with the wide range from white to black.

You didn't make our first allocation, however if you have a Nikon NPS Number I can switch you into the professional allocation and get it from Nikon quicker. Send me a PM with your NPS Number if you have one. If you don't have an NPS Number you can get one here:

Nikon Pro NPS Page

That's disappointing. I'm not sure how 4th on your list didn't make the first allocation. Oh well, I guess this camera is going to be difficult to get. Any ideas on who might be getting larger quantities from Nikon?
james
Nikon is required by law to send at least ONE camera to every dealer in the USA. Most get very very few cameras in the first shipment.

My local camera shop only got 3.....luckily I'm #1 biggrin.gif

That's the thing - try your local camera shop! They get just as many units in the first shipment as MOST of the big-boys.

Yes, I got an email from the store explainging that's exactly what happened.
I'm just being impatient and need to suck it up and wait my turn.

btw. Great customer service from Underwater Photo-Tech!

From what is being written about the added bulk of the D200 body I can't imagine how it would work in a D100 housing. The tolerances on my Light and Motion D100 housing seem very tight.

D-200 camera installation is easy, but finding room to install the iTTL conversion circuitry with its push buttons and LEDs is proving to be a problem..........

How about a non-TTL version first... smile.gif I bet it would sell a lot, especially with no other D200 housings to compete with.

Our Nikon sales rep came in today and I got to spend some more time with the D200. I took a couple of shots with the full sun in the top left corner using the 18-200 at the widest setting. I was really impressed, the sun area was not completely blown out and had a great ray pattern, the midground and forground areas were still properly exposed. The menu system looks very much like the D2X. The 18-200 was very impressive with lightning fast AF.

No word on the next allocation, he said it may be the kits with the 18-70 next.

Hi Ike,

Sounds like it's time for the iTTL sync cord we've all been drooling over. Camera buttons can be used to control Flash Exposure Compensation.

Cheers

That iTTL sync cord would be sweet, and a very smart solution.

Now, speaking of D200, did you guys see this? It is going for $2,500 on ebay:

Amazing!

Too bad I was not smart enough. I could have picked up a couple of D200s 4 days ago and made some quick bucks on ebay for more Chirsmas gifts for myself smile.gif

FYI, here is a link to a list of Sigma lenses that won't work with the AF button on the D200.

For those that can't wait to put their hands on the D200, or those that have it but want something more than the manual, Nikon has launched a very detailed D200 digital tutor. Here is the link:

Got my D200 Monday! From what I tried with it so far it seems like it's going to be a great camera. Headed for Palau in Feb. Think anyone will have a housing ready by then? rolleyes.gif

Rick,

You better beg Santa for that wish, because I don't think there will be any sort of volume of housings by them for sale to consumers mad.gif. But stranger things have happened. blink.gif

Have a nice smooth pro look to the pics what lenses? - No matter how good the body and megapixles the lens is still 70% at least I think so, would like to see a 250.00 lens pic and a 17-55 lens pic on the D200 or D2X.
anthp
I picked mine up just before Christmas and it's a lovely piece of kit. Will post more later. AF is a HUGE jump from D70s.

Ok, you asked for it, here you go. The photo attached was taken with the 17-55. I photographed the same thing under the same conditions with the cheap 24-50.

And here are the 100% crops with the two lenses. Do I need to say which is which?

Would just a cord to a bulkhead fit? Maybe you could just connect to a Nikonos bulkhead. I heard there was some maker developing a line of smart cords with converters built in, from Nikonos to some fairly decent strobes. Could be vaporware though, it's been a while since I heard of it.

The strobes were made by some company, I think the name starts with I, maybe Inon, I forget. I hope they keep it simple, no buttons or LEDs, because I get awful confused already with all them buttons and lights like the back of a semi truck.

It is Ikelite that is doing this, and this will be a possible solution. Look here:
