Just bought a 16mm Fisheye for Nikon D70. It comes with 4 different filters. Does anybody use any of the filters other than the one that is already on the lense when purchased?

Would highly recomend Alex Mustard's Magic Filter

When I shoot with strobes I use it without any filter. Alex's magic filter is a good option for natural light, as William said.

I'm sorry. I should of added that I will be using dual strobes. I really don't want to try available light shots just yet. The lense requires a filter at all times. I have thought about the magic filters but don't want to white balance everytime I want to take a shot.

Rocha,

I didn't see your post before. You can use this lense without a filter? The manual says it requires a filter at all times. There is one on the lense when purchased. I will take it off and see what happens.

Thanks
Rocha
I am sorry too! I just double checked it, and I only now noticed that I use it with the transparent filter (L37c) that came with the lens. All wide angle shots in the gallery below were taken with it:

The 10.5 is the one that I use without filters. I was confused.

P.S.: The filter can be removed to give better close-focusing capacity (which is good for underwater), but then the lens won't focus to infinity. That's why the manual says the filters are required.

If you shoot RAW you never have to set the WB.

Hi William,

Nice website. Do you ever use strobes with the magic filter. I know the shots would look bad at first but I guess if you shoot raw you could WB with PS. Or is it best not to use strobes at all. I have seen a lot of pics with the filter and am convinced that it would take a lot of time and practice for good shots that I don't have the patience for.

Yes I have used strobes in combination with magic filter.
This shot was done with magic filter and strobes

Nice shot! Thanks.

The orange filter is very good for black and white. Gives a high contrast effect, makes the water go black. But at depth it can be hard to see through, and once it is on the camera is only good for b&w.

Craig Jones has an excellent article about using filters on the lens and complimentary filters on your strobes. ChrisP used them in Florida and the Bahamas and I saw his results - stunning!!!

Cheers
