I'm seriously thinking of upgrading to DSLR. I'm currently using OLY C5060 in PT-027 with Heinrichs Nikonos adpater with YS120 Duo and Inon D2000. I use INON replacement port with 28AD lens. Great results, but i know i can do better. I've been taking pix topside with SLR for years. I've owned various SLR's and my current set up is Canon 10D with various lenses which are all currently on Ebay for sale! I'm torn between a D70s and the new D200. My reasoning is that if i go for the D70s i'm still only in the 6MP bracket which is what my 10D has been giving me for a while. I like to do topside photography as well so the advantage of the 10MP of the D200, plus the tough magnesium body is a serious plus point for me personally. All that makes me hang on before the plunge (pardon the pun) is housing availability/delay for the D200. My gut feeling is that it will be well supported as I can imagine there are quite a few of 'me' out there! My lens choice would be the 10.5mm prime nikon. I hope that Nexus will support the D200 with a nice FP160-5 dome port.

Hi Johnny,

You said everything, the D200 is obviously a better camera, but there are no housings for it yet (there is even no D200 yet). I really don't expect that the first housings start to show up before march of next year. So, the question is, can you wait these 4-6 months for a housing? How much diving/photography will you be doing between now and then?

If I were you, I would wait and keep using the oly, otherwise you will always going to be wondering if things would be different if you had the D200, and an upgrade from an OLY to a D70 to D200 is a lot more expensive than going directly from the OLY to the D200.

I don't want to step on any D70 shooters toes, it's a great camera but, unless you have some pressing need to get the DSLR immediately, I'd wait for the D200. Reports that I've seen seem to indicate that the D200 will have a substantially better viewfinder and AF than the D70. To me, that's hugely important. I'd at least want to have it available as an option before I made a purchase
I'm sure the D200 is going to a very popular model for U/W photography and the housing manufacturers are going to be trying beat each other to have a housing available so I don't think the wait will be too long.

I guess I'd also join the "wait for the D200" camp. While this camera is still vapoware it is vapoware with a realistic release date and housing manufacturers already going on the record saying that they will support it.

As James said in a recent post about two other cameras, when you consider the system cost the price differential between the two is much less.

As a D70 user I will join to the others here, the D70 is a great camera but I will be happy to have better AF and bigger viewfinder.
If it is not urgent, wait to the new model.

Thanx for the replies guys. Yep, i'll have to be a patient chap and bide my time on the housing front. By the way, just been to see 'into the blue' tonight with the other half. Great underwater sequences. But i've realised how much of a saddo i've become! I instantly recognised every underwater housing they were using! I need to get a life.... blink.gif
