Wetpixel Farne Islands Seal trip 2011

Wetpixel are running a two-day trip to the Farne Islands, Northumberland, UK to photograph the large rookery of common (Phoca vitulina) and grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) that live around the islets. These pinnipeds are renowned for their playful antics, and very close encounters and interactions are virtually guaranteed. We plan to maximize the opportunity to dive with them, and to get some stellar images.

We have booked skipper Paul Walker of Farne Island Divers for 5 and 6 September 2011; the late season being a better time for seal encounters. Paul has years of experience skippering and diving in the area, and many of the great seal images from the UK have been taken whilst diving with him. He runs a large RIB, which is the perfect platform for getting into the shallow areas that the seal prefer. Our aim is to get in the water for as long as possible with these amazing animals and to optimize the choice of sites to both our photographic needs and the prevailing conditions.

The trip leader will be Wetpixel Associate editor Adam Hanlon. The trip will cost £160/person for both days, excluding accommodation and travel. The boat will launch from Beadnell beach, Northumberland, and there is plenty of local accommodation available. We only have 8 free spaces, and expect them to be full soon, so please don’t delay in contacting him. It should be stressed early that if conditions were not suitable for photography (at the skipper’s discretion), full refunds would be available to participants.

Likewise, if you need assistance with travel or accommodation options, please feel free to contact Adam. We look forward to us all capturing some great images.
