Wetpixel Bahamas Sharks Expeditions

Wetpixel is offering two trips to dive and create images with the wonderful shark populations of the Bahamas in 2016. We are offering the opportunity to visit Bimini for greater hammerheads and dolphins, and/or Tiger Beach for tiger sharks. Both trips are running in conjunction with the excellent Epic Diving, who specialize in safe, reliable and absolutely amazing encounters with sharks!

Trip 2: Bimini hammerhead sharks and dolphins

March 4-9 2016

Bimini offers one of the best opportunities in the world for great hammerhead shark diving. During the winter months January through March, a healthy population of these elusive sharks congregate around the island’s waters. With numerous species of shark frequenting this area, you have opportunities to see Caribbean reef sharks (Carcharhinus perezii), nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum), bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas), and, of course, great hammerheads (Sphyrna mokarran). Thanks to the foresight of the Bahamas, making all waters surrounding the nations islands a marine sanctuary, we are able to enjoy the benefits of a healthy marine ecosystem.

We also plan to snorkel, photograph and interact with the pod of resident Atlantic spotted (Stenella frontalis) and bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus).

The trip will be led by Wetpixel Editor Adam Hanlon and it will run from 4 to 9 March 2016, and will be based on the island of Bimini. The trip includes:

We will be staying staying at the Bimini Big Game Club on the north side of the island. The rooms are a few short steps from the boat. There is also a restaurant and pool on location. In Bimini everything is close so it is easy to walk or rent a golf cart to go to restaurants, shopping, etc.

Trip 2: Tiger Beach

March 9-14 2016

The tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) of Tiger Beach, off Grand Bahama, are rightly famous for offering the best encounters available with the species in the world. Wetpixel ran a highly successful trip in 2015, and want to offer the opportunity again in 2016. As always, the trip will be designed to be photographically productive.

The trip is designed to maximize time and to get great images of the tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier), but there are also amazing photographic opportunities with the many lemon sharks (Negaprion brevirostriss) and Caribbean reef sharks (Carcharhinus perezii) that are attracted in to the action.

The trip is shore based, with the boat going out to the dive site each day and will be designed to maximize photographic opportunities.

The trip will be led by Wetpixel Editor Adam Hanlon and it will run from 9 to 14 March 2016, and will be based in the town of Freeport (FPO). The trip includes:

The hotel that we will be staying in for the trip has condo style rooms which are all ground floor and a few steps away from the boat. Each condo has 2 bedrooms with a private bathroom, full kitchen, living room with a half bath room, patio and laundry room.
