Filmmaker Ron Lagerlof has been testing the RED Dragon for underwater use. In synopsis, he finds that the new sensor is an “order of magnitude” over the MX sensor in terms of sharpness, clarity, color rendition and dynamic range.
He comments: “Everything I’ve learned about shooting Epic is still crucial to getting the best images from this camera, but its easier to push it deeper into the blacks, (it) holds highlights better, (and) shoots higher ISO without falling apart.
In terms of processing, the clips were primary grade out of Redcine-X, transcoded to ProRes 4x4 at 3840x2160, cut in Premier and exported at 1080p. No other grading or effects was applied in Premier.
