In his blog, Tony Wu talks about the ever-present and increasingly pervasive issue of trash in and around the oceans. He highlights that the issues around garbage in the seas are complex and cannot be solved solely by increasing awareness. There is some duplicity in richer nations congratulating themselves for achieving objectives around recycling and “clean” environments whilst cruise ships dump their trash overboard and the nations themselves export garbage to poorer nations for processing.
Marine dumping is still tolerated as it is “out of sight, out of mind” but as Tony points out:
“Everything that goes into the ocean comes back to us in some manner, sooner or later.
