The stunning underwater images coming out of the Rio Olympics give an interesting view into the sports of swimming, diving and synchronized diving. The Rio Olympics are the first year where the underwater cameras are actually robots. Getty photographers have two Canon 1DX Mark II cameras in remotely controlled housings that are operated by photographers above water during competitive events.

In the past, the photographers needed to fully map out the underwater images they wanted to shoot during the days events. The cameras could not be adjusted in real time as no photographers were allowed in the water during the events.

All 3 Getty underwater photographers are SCUBA certified and check the pool cameras everyday.
