New Access Restrictions for Three Sisters Springs

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has announced new restriction on access to the Three Sisters Springs. Manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris) visit the springs during cold weather periods. New studies have shown that when Gulf water temperatures at Shell Island dropped to below 17°C, this increased manatee numbers in the Spring. Hence the FWS will close the Spring to visitors when water temperatures at Shell Island drop below 17°C and only reopen when it rises above that temperature for 24 hours or longer.

Three Sisters management plan seeks user input

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has asked for consultation on another new proposed management plan for the Three Sister’s Springs, Florida. The new proposal is draconian for image makers. There is a consultation period, with the Fish and Wildlife Service soliciting email responses on the new plan. The deadline to have your voice heard is 4 September.

Daily updates from Three Sisters Spring available on Facebook

The influx of large numbers of manatees into the the Three Sister Springs area of Crystal River has lead to it being closed to visitors several times over the past few weeks. In order to try and disseminate information about its closure, the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) will be posting daily updates on its Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge Facebook page.

Manatee influx closes Three Sisters Spring

An apparent combination of low tides and cold weather created an influx of over 300 manatees (Trichechus manatus) into Three Sisters Spring, Crystal River, Florida on Monday. This lead to the US Fish and Wildlife Service issuing a temporary closure (to the public) of Three Sisters Springs.
