BBC India has reported on the remarkable story of Dinesh Goswami of the Prakruti Nature Club, Gujarat, India who has saved over 500 whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) by persuading local fishermen and politicians to protect them. When sharks become inadvertently tangled in fishing nets, Dinesh and his team record the animals statistics and the GPS location, before cutting the nets to release them.

BBC offers underwater camera operator bursary

The BBC is advertising a bursary to develop an individual as an underwater camera operator. The successful applicant will need a strong diving background and ideally will already be shooting underwater in 4K. He or she will be a part of the OCEAN production team, which is the next series in the Blue Planet and Planet Earth stable of programs. Filming is due to commence in January 2015.

Scientists from Edinburgh’s Heriot-Watt University have recently discovered a deepwater shark spawning ground off the waters of Scotland. Egg cases of the blackmouth catshark (Galeus melastomus) were discovered on the Mingulay Reef, the only known coral reef in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland.
