Researchers have announced the name of a new species of humpback dolphin. Sousa sahulensis or the Australian Humpback dolphin was officially identified in the journal Marine Mammal Science after being identified using DNA sequencing and skull morphology late in 2013.

The new species joins three other species, and is endemic to the region south of the Sahul Shelf, which sits between Australia and New Guinea. The Shelf serves as a natural barrier for many marine and terrestrial animals. (Illustration by U. Gorter).
