New species of river dolphin discovered in Brazil

River dolphin

In a paper published in PLOS ONE this week, a new species of river dolphin has been described. This is the first new species of river dolphin to be discovered since 1918. The new species differs from existing river dolphins in that it has 24 teeth per jaw compared to between 25 to 29.

The new species of dolphin was hiding right under scientist’s noses as the animals were sighted often.
