52, the name for the so called loneliest whale in the ocean, may just be the whale with the most friends on social media. A kickstarter campaign is currently underway to fund a research team to find the whale and film a documentary while doing so.

In 1989 scientists discovered a whale calling out at a frequency no other whales could understand, 52 Hertz. The whale has been heard on and off following similar migration patterns to blue whales and fin whales, but has never been spotted. Scientists believe that the unique call of this whale is not understood by any other whales, therefore making it the “loneliest whale.”

The Loneliest Whale has inspired songs, poetry, art and many many people around the world to pay attention to the ocean and its inhabitants as well as the growing problem of ocean noise pollution.
