SHARK-L writes letter of concern regarding Discovery’s Shark Week
DivePhotoGuide.com has posted an open letter to the Discovery Network by SHARK-L, an international shark discussion list made up of “scientists, educators, media companies, and others,” that opposes the content of Shark Week programming. The letter specifically draws attention to the continued “mindless man-eater” image, despite recent evidence to the contrary, and the lack of information about the finning crisis and depletion of shark species. Add your name to the letter and encourage the network to support shark conservation efforts during next year’s Shark Week.
Luiz Rocha travels to Northwestern Hawaiian Islands
Wetpixel moderator Luiz Rocha is currently participating in a research expedition to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands on the NOAA Ship Hi’ialakai. Over the past few days, he has been updating a travel journal discussion in the forums along each stop in the route, now including pictures of thousand-foot high island cliffs and groups of Galapagos sharks.
Luiz provides a unique look at an otherwise undisturbed ecosystem - the area is closed to the public and researchers are only granted access with specific permits. Follow his progress in the forum discussion or find the vessel’s location with the NOAA Ship Tracker.
Seminar by Jason Bradley on Photoshop for underwater photographers
Professional underwater photographer Jason Bradley, who was previously featured on Wetpixel for his work with the TOPP elephant tagging research, will be conducting a beginning to intermediate Photoshop seminar at Backscatter on July 21, 2007.
Topics include achieving realistic blue water backgrounds, sharpening for screen and print, and dodging and burning with adjustment layers. Geared specifically towards the underwater photographer, and limited to a mere twelve people, the class promises personalized instruction and a great chance to learn the art of refining your images. Galápagos National Park enforces dive permit regulations
Wetpixel members have been receiving notifications that their upcoming dive trips to the Galápagos Islands have been canceled. There is an active thread in the forums with information posted from multiple sources that confirms trips are being canceled due to enforcement of permit regulations.
Apparently, a specific diving permit is required in order to run dive charters inside the park. It looks like the Galápagos National Park is beginning to enforce tourism regulations as there are numerous tourism operators who only possess land tourism permits, but also carry out dive tourism as well. Tour operators benefited from the ambiguity and lack of enforcement over the years and offered services they were not permitted to. Now, many tour operators have been stopped from offering this option.
NYUPS presents Mark Snyder and Michael McNamara
At its next meeting, the New York Underwater Photographic Society (NYUPS) will feature a presentations by underwater photographer Mark Snyder, on “Improving your Underwater Lighting”, and Popular Photography and Imaging’s Michael McNamara, who will be providing an overview of upcoming gear and a detailed look at printing underwater photographs.

Stop the destruction of reef life in Mexico’s Sea of Cortez
Tomorrow is the last day to voice your support of Mexico legislation NOM-064, “intended to ban destructive fishing gear and techniques” used in commercial fishing in the Sea of Cortez. Over the last few years, the reef life in the area has significantly declined as a result of “pistoleros” (night divers with spear guns) and individuals on hookah equipment that drive the remaining fish into monofilament nets.
Sea Watch has issued a call to action to contact Mexican government and civic officials to encourage the implementation of NOM-064. Please show your support - sending an email takes less than a minute and requires only your name and e-mail address (if you wish to include either).
10Bar Ultra Compact Focusing Light Review
After growing dissatisfied trying to take photos with focus lights that left hotspots in the frame, Wetpixel member Jeff Mullins decided to try the 10Bar LED Ultra Compact Focusing Light, with its advertised ‘auto cut-out’ feature.
The camera focused almost instantly and after releasing the shutter, the strobes fired, the light switched-off and the image appeared on the camera LCD. A second later the light switched back-on…
