Subal ND30 underwater housing for Nikon D300 dSLR review

In March, underwater photographer Martin Edge took possession of and reviewed one of the first Subal ND30 housings on the market for his Nikon D300 dSLR. As a pre-production version of the housing there were a few bumps to get through, but Edge felt the product was excellent:

Whilst I’ll endeavour to be impartial as I can, the influence that Nikon and Subal have had on my own photographic career cannot be ignored…for use underwater I recommend the Nikon D300 very highly and after using and reviewing the ND30, I am unable to identify any particular aspect of this housing which I believe could be improved upon.

After testing a pre-production version of the unit last year, Wetpixel member Chris Zeller (UWphotoNewbie) recently received a copy of the new Ikelite modular flat port for the 8” dome port system, and has posted his impressions of the final product in the forums:

It’s fantastic and the build quality is excellent…the components are expensive, more expensive in fact than the 5 ports you need for the traditional system, and its been a long road coming, however it’s much more flexible and convenient.

HeinrichsWeikamp introduces standalone Remote Slave Unit

HeinrichsWeikamp has recently introduced a new Remote Slave Unit designed to trigger underwater strobes at distances of more than 25 meters, with the emphasis towards use in “creative pool, wreck and cave photography.”

The basic unit features a Nikonos 5-pin sync-cord connector, is compatible with all underwater strobes capable of providing a ready signal of at least 4V, and can also be used with a dual sync-cord. The unit is intended for use underwater, and will automatically deactivate topside due to saturation of the photo sensor.

“Sharkwater” DVD launch party and fundraiser for Shark Savers

A premiere party celebrating the release of “Sharkwater” on DVD will be held from 7-11 PM on April 11, 2008 at the Pink Elephant in New York, NY. The party will feature special guests Rob Stewart, director of the film, and Captain Paul Watson, founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, and all proceeds will benefit Shark Savers, a non-profit group dedicated to increasing awareness of shark conservation.

A $20 minimum donation includes entry, one-hour open bar, and music and dancing to a live DJ, and you have the option to contribute more. Be sure to RSVP before spaces fill up!

Delta Airlines begins new direct US-China route, serves shark fin soup

Delta Airlines recently began flying a non-stop route between Atlanta, Georgia and Shanghai, China, and to commemorate the occasion, held a 10-course banquet in which they served “braised shark’s fin soup with cucumber and fish maw.”

While China decided to ban shark fin soup for the Olympics, stating that it could “greatly hurt China’s national image,” that ban has unfortunately not been extended to other events involving foreign guests.

Aquatica announces underwater housing for Nikon D300 dSLR

Aquatica has sent us photos and details of their upcoming A300 housing for the Nikon D300 digital SLR. Featuring a 100m/300ft depth rating, the housing comes standard with two Nikonos strobe bulkheads, and offers compatibility with Aquatica’s new underwater remote trigger.
