We are currently running a competition for images to adorn a new logo that will be placed on the front page of the Flickr group! To do this we need underwater photographs of the highest quality. See this Flickr discussion for information on how to enter. Remember that all images added to our group pool end up on the collaborative slideshow page!

Alex Mustard is currently leading a Wetpixel expedition to photograph oceanic white-tip sharks in the Bahamas. Like last year, Alex and the guests onboard have been posting images from the days leading up to the trip departure, and will likely be posting images as soon as they get an internet connection upon returning to the West End marina at the end of the trip.

So far, they’ve photographed long-arm octopi, mating horseshoe crabs, jawfishes with eggs, and more. Click through to see Alex’s photos and for a video of Alex in action.

Underwater video taken with the Canon 5D Mk II

Wetpixel member Fergus Kennedy (Ferg42) has put up an underwater video taken with the Canon 5D Mk II digital SLR. The 5D2 shoots video in high definition at 1080p, and many underwater photographers are extremely interested in the possibility of having one rig that shoots both high-quality stills and video. Fergus’ video is the the first we’ve seen taken with the 5D Mk II.

Fergus shot the video “in the Egyptian Red Sea with the Canon 5D Mark II in an Ikelite housing which [he] converted (it was for the original 5D). Most of the shots are with a 15mm Fisheye lens, but there are a couple with a macro lens. Most of it is with natural light and a Magic Filter.”

During a shoot to document daily migration patterns of Mastigias jellies in Palau, Mark Thorpe and John Friday tested the field effectiveness of three underwater housings for the RED One Digital Cinema Camera. The housings were manufactured by AquaVideo, Gates, and an AquaVideo base housing retrofitted by Joe Ortega (SL Cine / Element Technica). Mark and John have written up a comprehensive document outlining the pros and cons of each housing. In addition, Nick Martorano has posted video clips of the big housings in action.
