Canon firmware updates for 1D Mk IV and Rebel T2i
Canon has released updates for the EOS 1D Mk IV and Rebel T2i (550D.) In both cases, the firmware is labeled v1.0.8 and primarily fixes:
“a phenomenon in which the set aperture moves unexpectedly when shooting movies in manual exposure mode using some Canon lenses (such as macro lenses). Supplemental Information: This phenomenon involves the aperture of the lens moving unexpectedly when the focusing ring moves (during focusing). Please note that aperture values also change when operating the zoom ring of a zoom lens that has variable maximum aperture values.”
The updates are available for download now.
AVCHD HD video workflow on Mac OS X
I’ve been cursing AVCHD ever since it started showing up in camcorders and still cameras that shoot video. I don’t really understand why it exists. Although its file and folder specification claims to be compatible with Blu-ray, it doesn’t seem likely that the majority of casual video shooters will choose to archive video content from cameras directly onto Blu-ray discs, and AVCHD’s awkward multiple-folder storage structure makes it extremely difficult to work with in video editing workflows.
Tokina AT-X 16-28mm lens released
Nikon Rumours has confirmed the imminent release of the Tokina AT-X 16-28mm PRO FX lens. It will be initially in a Nikon F mount, with Canon mounts to follow soon. It has a maximum aperture of f/2.8 across the zoom range, and is designed for use with full-frame digital SLR cameras. The lens design incorporates a new SD-M (Silent Drive-Module) DC autofocus motor and GMR high-precision magnetic AF sensor, which together aim to reduce focusing noise and increase both speed and accuracy.
AQUA 2 amphibious robot showcased
Dr. Gregory Dudek, together with PhD candidates Junaed Sattar and Anqi Xu of McGill University school of computer science in Montreal, Canada, have developed AQUA 2: a robot which can move on land as well as swim and dive in the water.
The autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) uses six independently controlled fins to offer a highly maneuverable underwater sensor platform. The arrangement of highly compliant thrusting surfaces results in a vehicle that poses no danger to humans or sea life and can land or take-off with minimal impact. Tested to a depth of 120 feet, the robot has an intended operating range from the shoreline to 100 feet.
