Micron Discontinues Lexar memory cards
Micron Technology announced today that it is discontinuing its retail sales of the ubiquitous Lexar memory cards in order to focus on “increasing opportunities in higher value markets and channels.” Micron are seeking a buyer for al or part of the Lexar business. If this is unsuccessful, Lexar as a brand will cease to exist.
Ron Watkins: Salmon Shark - Behind the Shot
Ron Watkins recently shared a fantastic shot of a Salmon Shark (Lamna ditropis) on the Wetpixel Facebook page, and it got a lot of attention since these are incredibly hard sharks to shoot - skunking many an underwater photographer. We asked him to share how he got the shot and the settings behind the shot with the Wetpixel Community. Here is his story.
USPS announces Sharks Forever Stamps
The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced a set of stamps featuring iconic shark species. Norbert Wu, among others, has has his image of a great white (Carcharodon carcharias) immortalized as postage stamp. The release aims to highlight shark’s role in the oceans and to offset some of the demonization they face from society.
The Ethics of Octopus imagery: Part 1
In an editorial based on the Smithsonian Magazine’s response to the fact that that one of the finalists of their “Natural World” contest was displaying anything but natural behavior, Wetpixel Editor Adam Hanlon points out some of the issues around the ethics of major wildlife photography contests. At the time of the contest and in their subsequent email statements, the Smithsonian specifically excluded images that had been “manipulated” in post production, but allowed images that featured wildlife subjects that had been deliberately manipulated at the point of capture.
Genus Manta ceases to exist
A paper in the Zoological Journal reports that DNA sequence data from mitochondrial genomes and c. 1000 nuclear exons has proven that the members of the genus Manta actually sit within Mobulla. Hence the oceanic manta previously known as Manta birostris and the reef manta, Manta alfredi are now known as Mobula birostris and Mobula alfredi.
Dominican Republic bans shark fishing
The Dominican Republic has announced a ban on the fishing and trading of sharks, rays, parrotfish and sea urchins within its waters. FIS has also reported that the trade of any derivate products, including import and export will be banned. The sharks fishing ban is for an indefinite period, whereas the other species have either a 2 or 5 year ban.
Underwater photo series brings awareness to ghost nets
Underwater photographer Jose Cano and performance artist Cristine Beggs collaborate to bring awareness to the problem of ghost nets. The pair worked together to produce underwater images that put Beggs and other models in uncomfortable looking situations with nets to represent the plague of ghost nets on ocean wildlife. The pair hopes that through these images change can be made.
Underwater photographer Ryo Minemizu wins 5th Nikkei National Geographic Photo Award
Underwater photographer Ryo Minemizu has won the 5th Annual Nikkei National Geographic Photo Award for his series titled The Secret World of Plankton. Minimize has spent the last 20 years diving and photographing larval ocean creatures off the coast of Japan. In that time he has perfected a technique that captures animals maturing from their larval stage to adult. After a high tide, once the sun goes down, Minemizu sets up 30 LED lights on tripods to attract the almost invisible organisms, waiting sometimes for hours at a time.
