Snake River Prototyping launch video contest

Snake River Prototyping are running a competition on their Facebook page. The company is soliciting entries of videos shot using their BluFix lens for the GoPro POV cam. All entries can be viewed on their Facebook page, and the public are invited to “like” their favorites. The films with the most “likes” by 30 November, will be awarded prizes including a GoPro camera and URPro filters.

Eight countries pledge support for sharks

UnderwaterTimes reports that the leaders of eight countries launched an initiative aimed at preventing the extinction of sharks. Under the declaration signed by the Bahamas, Colombia, Honduras, the Maldives, the Marshall Islands, Mexico, Micronesia and Palau, up to 6 million additional square kilometers (2.3 million square miles) could be designated as shark sanctuaries. The pledge commits signatories to: “Maintain or develop shark sanctuaries, work together internationally to ensure healthy shark populations, and advocate for better science-based precautionary protection for sharks in all international fora.”

Jürgen Freund to speak at Wildphotos 2011

Underwater photographer Jürgen Freund has been listed to talk at Wildphotos 2011. He plans to: “Reveal the richest place in the sea”, and to transport delegates to the other side of the world with “dive-tales from the Coral Triangle”. He will join fellow underwater photographer Thomas P Peschak and a host of leading wildlife photographers for the event, which is to be held at the Royal Geographic Society, London on 21 and 22 October.

Nikon Capture NX updated Photo

Nikon Capture NX updated

Nikon has released an update for its Capture NX photo editing program. Version 2.2.8 adds support for RAW images captured with the Nikon 1 V1, Nikon 1 J1 and COOLPIX P7100. In addition, it updates the information for lenses used with the Auto Distortion correction function under Camera & Lens Corrections in the Develop section of the Edit List.

It also fixes a bug that caused gray edges to be displayed when the Auto Lateral Color Aberration function under Camera & Lens Corrections in the Develop section of the Edit List was applied to RAW images. The update is available from the Nikon support site.

Subal housings for Panasonic GF2 and GF3

Subal has announced the release of two new housings for the Panasonic GF2 and GF2 EVIL cameras. These feature the standard Subal manufacture techniques and surface coatings, as well as the QuickLock closure system. The SGF2 and SGF3 also feature access to all camera controls (including flash raise/lower), are backwards compatible with all bayonet fitting Subal ports and have a fiber optic port for strobe triggering.

Availability is from October and prices are still to be confirmed.
