Kayakers experience humpbacks feeding in San Francisco Bay
A small group of kayakers experienced a rare sight this past sunday when they encountered a group of humpback whales feeding in San Francisco Bay. Lyrinda Snyderman and Dick Mallory from Petaluma, California were kayaking in the bay when they spotted a group of feeding seabirds and went to investigate. What they encountered was a group of feeding humpback whales, an encounter not often experienced in San Francisco Bay.

Adobe updates Lightroom Mobile
Adobe has released a significant update to Lightroom Mobile. Both iOS version (2.4) and Android (2.1) now allows raw images to be imported via a card reader, edited and exported. Camera and lens support is as per the desktop version. The new versions allow linear and radial selections and copyright information can be added to all images on import.

Photographers sought for new reality series in the US
A new photographer reality series has just been announced and is seeking participants. The 5 part series is called Top Photographer with Nigel Barker and will be aired on AdoramaTV. The contest is open to all levels of US based photographers, from professional to hobby photographers.The grand prize winner will receive a $50,000 US photo gear package (including a Canon 1DX II) and an exhibition in New York City.
RED announces Helium sensor
RED Digital Cinema has announced a new 8K sensor which it is calling Helium. At 29.9x15.77mm it is much smaller than the current Dragon sensor, which measures 40.96x21.6mm, but both sensors have 8192x4320 pixels. The new sensor will be available for the existing Weapon camera and a new camera, the Epic-W, will be designed around it in the future. The Helium sensor’s size will give greater lens compatibility.
Underwater microscope documents coral behaviour
A paper in the journal Nature Communications reports on the results of Benthic Underwater Microscope (BUM). The device, designed by Scripps Institution of Oceanography was deployed in the Gulf of Eilat and produced imagery of corals apparently “embracing” and turf wars between coral polyps. The microscope was also able to capture recently bleached living coral being colonised by algae when it was used at Maui, Hawaii.
Thom Hogan releases guides to D750 and D500
Nikon guru Thom Hogan has released his Complete Guides to the Nikon D500 and D750 cameras. His guides are renown as being the most comprehensive resource for Nikon SLR owners. Both have over 900 pages of information about each camera that is unlikely to be available from a single source elsewhere.
